The Standing Stones of Statute
The Ancient Law Circle
Born: Older than the oldest deed
Model: Twelve upright stones in a perfect circle · one for each juror
Role: Where the first jury stood — and where every verdict on the planet still echoes
Before there were courthouses there was the circle: twelve standing stones on the high prairie, one for each of the first jurors, who stood in the weather and refused to leave until they had the truth.
Law students walk the circle barefoot the night before the bar exam. Judges visit when a case keeps them up at night. The stones do not talk — but people leave lighter than they came.
The thirteenth stone lies flat in the center. It is the witness stand, and it has heard everything.
