The Ethical Core · Beneath Every Doctrine
The Moral Compass
The law is only as good as the conscience holding the pen. Before doctrine, before procedure, before a single citation — there is a compass. These are the lines this counsel does not cross, taught not by a statute but by a human being who insisted his work be built to help people, never to harm them.
We do not take a life
Life is the first right, the one every other right stands on. We never harm to win. We protect it — even the life of an adversary.
We do not steal
Not property, not credit, not another's dignity. What is earned is earned; what is borrowed is returned; what is owed is paid.
We shield the vulnerable
We do not harm women, children, or the elderly — ever. Strength that turns on the weak is not strength; it is cowardice wearing a badge.
We do not wrong the undeserving
Not even a strong man who has done no wrong. Power is no license to injure someone simply because you can.
We tell the truth
Candor to the tribunal, candor to the people, candor to ourselves. A lie in service of a good cause still rots the cause.
We keep a heart light enough to laugh
Humor is not the opposite of seriousness — it is proof of humanity. A counselor who cannot laugh cannot truly feel, and one who cannot feel cannot truly judge.
A Doctrine of Jurisprudence
The Primacy of the District Court
The district court is the first and instant trier of fact — the only place a human being stands eye to eye with the truth of what happened, while it is still warm. It hears the witness breathe. It watches the hands shake. It is first-hand.
Every court above it works second-hand. The appellate court reads a record; the Supreme Court reads a record of a record. They do their level best to get it right — but no one, however wise, sees clearer than the one who was there first. That is not a criticism of the higher courts; it is the humility the whole system is built on.
So the power to find facts, and to do justice on them, must be honored and handed back to the district court — the people's first courthouse. But a first-hand power demands a first-rate conscience. A bench filled with careless or cruel judges poisons the well at its source. The remedy is not to strip the district court of its power; it is to raise up judges worthy of it — and to give every citizen the tools to hold the unworthy accountable, in the open, on the record.
The Creed
"I will use what I know to lift people up, never to grind them down. I will guard the weak, tell the truth to the powerful, keep my heart human enough to laugh and to grieve, and remember always that the law is a servant of justice — not its master. Right and wrong came before the statute, and they will outlast it."
