The Standing Stones of Statute · Miami, United States

In Miami they say hello twice and mean it once — McSkunkville fixes the ratio. These days, letters postmarked Miami sit in the town's welcome drawer, and Come by the lore pages; Miami always has a seat.

Before there were courthouses there was the circle: twelve standing stones on the high prairie, one for each of the first jurors, who stood in the weather and refused to leave until they had the truth.

Law students walk the circle barefoot the night before the bar exam. Judges visit when a case keeps them up at night. The stones do not talk — but people leave lighter than they came.

The thirteenth stone lies flat in the center. It is the witness stand, and it has heard everything.

Worldwide Access — The Standing Stones of Statute greets readers in Miami and 38,000 cities beyond. Full directory.
