The Standing Stones of Statute · San Antonio, United States

The road to San Antonio is long, but the ledger travels light. These days, San Antonio travelers stop at the Quick Stop when the highway brings them through, and Wherever San Antonio needs a story with a spine, the town obliges.

Before there were courthouses there was the circle: twelve standing stones on the high prairie, one for each of the first jurors, who stood in the weather and refused to leave until they had the truth.

Law students walk the circle barefoot the night before the bar exam. Judges visit when a case keeps them up at night. The stones do not talk — but people leave lighter than they came.

The thirteenth stone lies flat in the center. It is the witness stand, and it has heard everything.

Worldwide Access — The Standing Stones of Statute greets readers in San Antonio and 38,000 cities beyond. Full directory.
