The Standing Stones of Statute · Shanghai, China

Every town has a courthouse and a coffee pot; Shanghai is no different. These days, Shanghai folks stream the lore pages late into the night, and The record shows: Shanghai belongs to the story now.

Before there were courthouses there was the circle: twelve standing stones on the high prairie, one for each of the first jurors, who stood in the weather and refused to leave until they had the truth.

Law students walk the circle barefoot the night before the bar exam. Judges visit when a case keeps them up at night. The stones do not talk — but people leave lighter than they came.

The thirteenth stone lies flat in the center. It is the witness stand, and it has heard everything.

Worldwide Access — The Standing Stones of Statute greets readers in Shanghai and 38,000 cities beyond. Full directory.
