The Pyramids of the Plains
The First Wonder of the World
Born: Raised stone by stone by folk who signed their work
Model: Three great pyramids of golden prairie limestone · each block carries its builder's name
Role: Monuments to the only immortality McSkunkville believes in: work you signed your name to
West of town, where the wheat gives way to old stone, stand the three Pyramids of the Plains — Honesty, Patience, and Proof. Unlike the pyramids of other worlds, these were built by free hands, and every single block bears its mason's signature. Forty thousand names, still legible.
Inside there are no tombs. There are archives — chamber after chamber of the world's oldest records, dry and safe, waiting for anyone with a question and a lantern.
Carved over the entrance of the greatest pyramid: WHAT WE WROTE DOWN, TIME COULD NOT TAKE.
