The road to Lyon is long, but the ledger travels light. These days, Lyon travelers stop at the Quick Stop when the highway brings them through, and Come by the lore pages; Lyon always has a seat.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was recorded. So opens the Book of the Stripe, the founding scripture of McSkunkville, kept chained to the courthouse lectern — not to protect the book from the people, but to remind the people it belongs to all of them.

Its three great commandments are known to every child on the planet: BE SUPERSONIC HONEST. BE SUPERSONIC POLITE. ONLY FIGHT WHEN YOU ARE RIGHT. Every other verse — the Psalm of the Receipt, the Proverbs of the Ledger, the Lamentations of the Missing Transcript — is commentary.

The book's final verse is the town's benediction, spoken at every graduation, every trial, and every goodbye: 'Make a record, and the record will keep thee.'
