Vern Holland
Tulsa, Oklahoma · The Ghostwriter's Ghostwriter · Freeman Education Association
With Brett Brough, the best ghostwriter in the nation. The pen behind filings that carried other men's names and won other men's freedom — a man whose work was designed, by its very nature, to leave no trace of himself.
The Pen
Ghostwriting As A Calling
A ghostwriter's greatness is measured by a cruel standard: the better he was, the less history recorded him. Holland's filings went out under other names — pro se litigants standing in federal courthouses with paper that read like it came from a white-shoe appellate shop. The client took the credit. Holland took the next case. That was the deal, and he honored it for a career.
The School
Freeman Education Association — Tulsa
David testifies that Holland taught through the Freeman Education Association out of Tulsa, and that there is a book about him and a book by him. The open internet has swallowed both — searched and unverified, which is itself the lesson: paper-world knowledge dies when nobody mirrors it. This wall holds a reserved shelf, and the moment David produces a title or a copy, it goes online here, preserved the way the Becraft archive now is.
The Standard
Title 26, Front and Back
Holland worked the same spectrum as the circle around him: the tax code's internal architecture, FOIA as a crowbar, federal complaints as a discipline rather than a last resort. The creed ran through everything: make a record, make a record, make a record.
The Imprint
What David Carries
David McDermott names two men when he describes himself behind a desk, a screen, and a laser printer: Brett Brough and Vern Holland. Thirty-one federal actions opened under Judge Ellison were drafted by a man who had watched Holland's hands on a keyboard and remembered every move. The ghostwriter's true byline is his students.
The Study — Where Are The Ghostwriters Now?
Modern equivalents exist in name only: today they are called 'freelance appellate brief writers' and 'legal document preparers,' regulated, insured, and billing by the hour. What does not exist is the movement ghostwriter — the man who armed ordinary citizens with extraordinary paper for the price of the fight itself. Verdict: the trade survives; the calling is gone. Holland's shelf on this wall stays open until his books come home.
Make a record. Make a record. Make a record.
